Case studies

Real journeys our crews have made, and how we planned them.

These are real journeys made by our crews. Names, places and some details have been changed to protect the people involved.

Real journey · Secure transfer

Transfer to a unit two hours from home

The request: a young man was moving to a unit two hours from home. It was his first journey in a secure vehicle, and the referral noted high anxiety about travelling.

What we did: the crew arrived early and met him on the ward with his named nurse. They spent about 20 minutes explaining the journey: where everyone would sit, when they would stop and what he could bring. He chose the music.

The outcome: no physical intervention was needed, and there was one planned stop. The crew handed over in person, with written notes for his care plan on what had helped him during the journey.

Real journey · Patient discharge

Going home after a long hospital stay

The request: a woman in her sixties was going home after a long inpatient stay. She was worried about her neighbours seeing her arrive.

What we did: the crew planned the journey with her beforehand. She chose the arrival time, her daughter followed in her own car, and the crew didn’t wear uniform at the door.

The outcome: the handover took place at her kitchen table. Her daughter later told the ward the journey had felt calm and ordinary.

Real journey · Section 136 support

Handover from police at a place of safety

The request: police were waiting with a distressed man at a place of safety and needed to hand over so they could return to duty.

What we did: the crew introduced themselves and explained their role, including that they weren’t police. They waited with him in a quiet room while the vehicle was prepared. He travelled in the front passenger area, the least restrictive option for him.

The outcome: officers were released within the commissioned timeframe. The handover to the receiving unit included notes on what had helped him stay settled.
