Mental Health Transport Assistant – Maidstone

Applications close 20 December 2026.

Join our Maidstone crew providing safe, dignified mental health patient transport – full training provided, experience welcome but not essential.

Pay: from £27,133.80 a year · Contract: Full-time · Reports to: Deputy Care Operations Manager

About the role

This role involves far more than driving. You’ll work directly with patients, ensuring safe and dignified transport, often during mental health crises – applying de-escalation techniques and trained interventions, always putting patient wellbeing first.

Experience is a bonus but not essential – full training is provided. We’re looking for empathetic, resilient people who thrive in a team and are committed to respectful, person-centred care.

What you’ll be doing

  • Hospital transfers, court or prison escorts and medical appointments
  • Section 135 warrants, working alongside police and mental health professionals
  • Community assessments supporting local authority mental health reviews
  • Bed watch services, supervising and supporting admitted patients
  • Suite work: care and supervision in Section 135/136 places of safety
  • Working in crews of two or more, rotating between driving, escorting and sitting with patients in our specially adapted vehicles

What you’ll need

  • Full UK manual driving licence (required); minimum 12 months’ driving experience preferred
  • Enhanced DBS within the last 3 years (preferred)
  • Strong communication, calm under pressure, empathy and attention to detail

Training and benefits

  • Full induction: de-escalation, physical intervention and First Aid training, plus apprenticeships and career progression
  • Company pension, refer-a-friend bonus and Health Care Cash Plan (after probation)
  • Blue Light Card eligibility and Employee Assistance Programme from day one
  • Full uniform and enhanced PPE; additional annual leave after 2 years
  • Wagestream financial wellbeing platform

Flexibility is essential in this role – shifts may vary with patient needs. Enhanced pay applies for Place of Safety and bed watch work, with over-runs and extra shifts paid at additional rates. We are a Veteran Aware employer and are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. We do not provide sponsorship.
